The name change came about because then- Mayor John Witherspoon decided that Baldwin should be the only city in Alabama with an education system of its own after Birmingham's school system became integrated into the federal government's educational establishment under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program in 1933.

The community began as a small agricultural village with about seventy residents before becoming an incorporated municipality in 1938; its nameakes were chosen because early settlers had difficulty finding local fairs or tournaments to attend which would bring people together as a community Many events that occur throughout the year affect both locals and visitors alike: deer hunting season starts in Octoberm,, antique sales take place during November/December, Christmas tree trimming takes place mid-January through early February (and sometimes earlier if there are enough volunteers!), football games take place throughout December/January culminating with "The Game" which typically concludes with a victory over either Auburn or Alabama State College In addition to these regular events there are several annual festivals that attract large crowds: Harvest Festival & Pumpkin Patch Festivals around Thanksgivingtime followed by springtime festivals such as Mayflower Days or Bluebonnet Festival etc.; numerous family fun days including Oneonta Dayfest - one of only three days per year where all four surrounding counties come together for shopping; various outdoor concerts throughout summer months featuring country music acts such as Shania Twain or Tim McGraw
