In 1822 John Covington arrived inAlabama with his family from Tennessee and began operating a saltworks on Mobile Bay which he named LiverpoolSalt Works after his home city of Liverpool, England where he had worked as a clerk before coming to Alabama. This saltworks became one of the largest salt production plants west of the Mississippi River before it closed down around 1830 due to competition from New Orleans' La Salle Salt Company which had moved upriver into deeper water sources with greater profits than LiverpoolSalt Works could generate on land that was too salty for their products." In 1830 Doniphan County was established including parts of what are now Florence Township and Lauderdale County formed out of parts including Athens (then known as Choctawtown) eastward along Mobile Bay including present day Florence Township as well as sections westward including present day Baldwin County On November 3rd 1830 George Pickering organized 11 men under Captain James Purdy at Fort Pickering near modern dayMobile Shoals in order to establish an outpost on Pensacola Bay which would become Jacksonville, Florida Captain Purdy's outpost wasn't successful but soon thereafter another group led by Andrew Jackson set up shop at Chickasaw Bayou northeast of MobileBayou (present day Econole Street)
