Gadsden, Alabama is a small town located in central Alabama. The population was 2,368 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tuscaloosa-Fairfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gadsden was founded in 1814 and named for General Andrew Jackson. The city was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1814. By 1830, Gadsden had a population of 1,500 people. The area that now makes up Gadsden was originally inhabited by the Creek Nation and later English settlers. In 1859, Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops at Fair Oaks Plantation, driving them out of the town and killing many residents. In 1865, Gadsdens mayor Benjamin Fenton negotiated an agreement with Governor John Bell to annex Mobile County to Alabama so that it would have a more centralized government. However, this arrangement fell through when Bell died soon afterwards. In 1870, Gadsden became one of eight settlements within Mobile County that were established as voting districts for new county officials. In 1901, Gadsden voted unanimously to secede from Mobile County and become its own separate municipality calledFairbanks Village (now known as WestMobile). The secession vote was prompted by dissatisfaction with the rapid growth ofMobile City which had replaced Fairbanks Village as the municipal seat after annexation into Mobile County in 1901; Pascagoula had been renamed Pensacola two years earlier). After becoming an independent municipality,Gadsden experienced rapid growth due to its location on the Gulf Coast between Mobile and Pensacola; it reached its peak population of 1009 persons in 1910 but decline during World War I before rebounding during World War II with a population over 2,000 people again according to the 1950 census (the most recent available data). During World War II Gadsdens manufacturing sector played an important role in providing munitions for both American and Japanese forces; this helped contribute to local economic prosperity throughout the war period until postwar declines began among some sectors of local economy including manufacturing following Pearl Harbor Attack On December 7th 1941 which led to loss of jobs for many locals males aged 25–54 years old combined with increased competition from other urban areas across Americapost-war especially South Floridafollowing 1945 Allied victory over Japan
