Gardendale is a small town in north Alabama, located on the Schleicher River. The community was founded in 1881 by Welsh immigrants. In 1920, Gardendale became an incorporated city. Additionally, an oil well was drilled near Gardnerdale in 1901 which led to increased business for the millowners; however it also did not lead to significant growth within town boundaries until after World War II when new industry began redeveloping nearby neighborhoods such as Northgate Village with more jobs available closer to downtown Birmingham During World War II many job seekers relocated into Gardendale from other parts of Alabama including Marshalltown & Spring Hill which became known as "the little cities". After 1945 many factories closed throughout Alabama but gardenedale continued expanding with several new businesses being opened such as A&P gas station/convenience store (1950), grocery store/cafeteria (1959), water tower/Pepsi fountain ($) - now known as Walmart ($1 million donation) - becoming one of largest employers within town limits .
