Gardendale, Alabama is a small town located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest community in Tuscaloosa County by population. The first settler in Gardendale was John Pritchett and his family who arrived on October 16, 1835. They were the first white people to live in what is now Gardendale. The first post office was established in 1836, and named after Mr. Pritchett's father-in-law, Jabez Gardner. There were only 12 residents of Gardendale when it was organized as an unincorporated community on November 3, 1853. It became a borough on January 1st of 1907. The first store in Gardendale was built by Elisha Pond and operated from an old log cabin until it burned down on December 9th of that year. A new store was built and opened for business on May 15th of 1857 with Wm Weaver as the owner/manager. George Nix erected the present frame house which served as the town hall until it burned down on October 29th of 1951 . The original courthouse which stood east of Main Street between Court Avenue and Second Street was destroyed by fire on September 25th of 1902 . A new courthouse replaced it and opened for business on November 6th of that year . The courtroom had a seating capacity for 100 people but only 40 ever attended because there were not enough seats available for everyone! When the court moved to its current location behind First Baptist Church in 1954 all but 10% of its original jurors resigned due to overcrowding!. A United Methodist church also serving as a meeting place for local farmers dating back to before 1945 (the first such church being planted near where Third Street met Main) has been standing since then providing worship space during regular school hours while other services are held at home or outdoors when necessary according to weather conditions! Gardendale has experienced many changes over its history including becoming an unincorporated community; being annexed by Tuscaloosa County; having its borders changed multiple times; experiencing two fires; becoming part of Hoover City; losing its status as an unincorporated community again after rejoining Tuscaloosa County; experiencing numerous name changes throughout its history including Gardendale Borough (1907-1952), Gardendale Township (1952-1972), finally reverting back to Gardendale following annexation by Montgomery County in 1972

It was established as a community on the east side of Mobile Bay by settlers in 1878. The name comes from the French word "garde" meaning "watchtower". The first post office in Gardendale was established in 1879. In 1903, the town became a part of Mobile County and had its own courthouse and jail. In 1907, it merged with neighboring Pleasant Grove to form the new town of Gardendale-Pleasant Grove. A shopping center was built in Gardendale-Pleasant Grove in 1967 and served as its central business district until 2000 when it was replaced by an all-purpose mall. In 2007, Gardendale became home to the University of South Alabama football team's practice fields after moving from Tuscaloosa, Alabama which had been their home since 1893. The school has also constructed several academic buildings including a gymnasium and four residence halls within walking distance of each other on campus.
