From 1840 to 1865, Mr. Gentry ran the business alone until he married Miss Ella Dixon. With Mrs. Dixon's help, the business became known as the Gentry Shooting Gallery and continued operations until 1965 when it was sold to Don Waddell Jr., who ran it for more than 30 years before selling it to his son-in-law Roy Jinks in 2001. Gardendale, Alabama is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come overland from Ireland. Gardendale's initial boom came during the Agricultural Depression of the 1930s when many farmers in Tuscaloosa and other nearby counties lost their jobs because of low commodity prices and a general recession. However, although Gardendale has been resilient during times of economic volatility, its current economy depends largely on service industries such as trucking, retail trade, and construction. Today Gardendale's nickname is "the little village" since it only has about 230 residents living in single-family housing, most of which are clustered around Main Street and Second Avenue. Although there are some large shopping complexes located within a short distance of town proper (including one called Regional Mall), most people here live close to home or work in surrounding communities. Gardendale's history can be traced back to 1871 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived overland from Ireland on foot from Liverpool. They were welcomed by local farm families who provided them with land and food for their labor until they could start their own farms. Early settlers included four brothers - James Grant, Hugh Grant, John Grant, and David Magowan - all born into poverty but determined to better themselves through hard work and education; all died before reaching adulthood due to disease or accident outside of farming society (Grant c1928). A second wave of Irish immigrants arrived between 1916 and 1922 and were more successful at starting businesses ashore than in America; this group included Patrick O'Malley (1879-1964) who became president of Bank Of Scotland in Birmingham; his son Denis O'Malley (1924-2008) served as CEO of Merrill Lynch & Co., one of Wall Street's largest banks; while another descendant – Seán Donnellan – cofounded Invesco Ltd., one of London's leading investment houses after World War II (Donnellan 1910). The devices consisted of a wooden or metal frame with a hole drilled through it, through which a target could be placed. This system was very inaccurate, as target movement was caused by both wind and gravity. To make up for this inaccuracy, targets were often held stationary for extended periods of time, making them less likely to move. In 1892, an improvement to target holders was developed that utilized two frames instead of one. This new design allowed for more accurate movement of the target due to its two frames being able to interact with each other. This system became known as “Tandem Target Holders” and was used by both sides during World War I. Gardendale's name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where deer or other animals graze." Famous residents include Gov. George C Marshall and Dr. JB Whipple, both prominent doctors in Mobile County during the early 20th century. Early businesses included a livery stable and a grocery store before becoming agricultural production centers supplying supermarkets in Pensacola and Birmingham. Today, Gardendale is home to several antique stores as well as several restaurants including Blue Moon Tavern and Granny Smith's Café & Bakery. Gardendale has been host to many annual events such as the Christmas parade which began on First Saturday of every month in December until it moved to Madison Square Garden in 2006 due to low attendance; summertime carnivals featuring food truck rides, games, music and contests; and festivals such as Folk Days (July), Highland Days (August) and Ruby Tuesday Festival (September).
Gardendale is located in Jefferson County, Alabama, and it was founded in 1818. The town was named for General James Gardener, who fought in the Mexican-American War.
