Gulf Shores, Alabama is a small town located in Montgomery County, Alabama. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The community was founded in 1887 by oilmen from Mobile and Pensacola, Florida who arrived on the steamboats Gulfstream I and Gulfstream II. They named their community after gulfshore points in those two states. The first post office in Gulf Shores opened in 1889. The town grew rapidly during World War I due to its proximity to military bases and manufacturing plants. By 1920, it had a population of over 10,000 people. During World War II, Gulf Shores became an important shipping port for munitions production in southernAlabama as well as for military supplies enteringthe war from Texas and Mississippi. In 1945, the navy moved its command center from Mobile to Gulf Shores because of increased naval activity along the Mobile-Tuscaloosa-Birmingham corridor. In 1951, when Montgomery County was created out of parts of Montgomery and Marshall counties, Gulf Shores became its county seat. At that time it had a population of just under 9800 people; however, by 1970 it had grown to over 17200 people with a significant portion living within walking distance of local businesses and services such as libraries, schools and hospitals
