Gulf Shores is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 6,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw–Fairbanks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Gulf Shores were traders and missionaries from Europe who came in 1808. In 1819, Captain James Folsom founded a trading post on the bayou known as Folsomville after himself and his family. The post served as a stop for goods being shipped upriver to Mobile from Pensacola, Florida and other points east. By 1825, Folsomville had become an arsenal for exporting local products such as cotton and saltpeter to New Orleans. In 1840, Gulf Shores emerged as one of the largest slave-based economies in Alabama with over 100 slaves working on plantations northeast of town near present day Chickasaw Lake Boulevard/Alabama State Route 231E. Slavery ended in 1865 when General Custer's Ulysses S Grant's army burned all remaining slave-run plantations throughout Mississippi and Alabama following his march through that state into Confederate territory during the American Civil War. Gulf Shores became an agricultural center after emancipation began in 1865 along with many other towns in central Alabama due to new transportation methods developed by railroads which allowed goods to be delivered quickly and cheaply acrossstate lines without having to leave their origins or destinations behind. Cotton production continued until around 1940 when it largely replaced oilseed production as the major economic driver in Gulf Shores with some small businesses still engaged in oilseed production today but majority relying now on agricultural exports such as soybeans, fruits, vegetables, rice and corn
The town of Gulf Shores was founded in 1821 by Captain John Fisk and his family. The town grew rapidly after it was annexed by Mobile in 1827. In 1853, the town became a part of Mobile County and was renamed Gulf Shores. The population of Gulf Shores peaked in 1910 at 15,000 people, but growth stopped during World War I and the Great Depression. The population declined again until 1990 when it reached 5,500 people.
