The name originated with its location on the mouth of River Tuscaloosa which formed part of Spanish Pensacola de Galveston before being given to Gulf Shores along with other tracts east of Mobile Bay by General James Gadsden during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. It has been reported that there are several theories about how Gulf Shores got its name: 1) It may be derived from a phrase meaning "halfway up" or "in between two points" attributed to Captain John A. Macon while anchored off shore at Bogue Inlet during 1867; 2) It may be derived from white sand beaches near Pensacola which were visible from shoreline; 3) It may be named after Commodore Hapgood Ike Davis who donated land for development; 4) Some say it was named for Admiral Samuel J.) Richardson who served as Commander-in-Chief U S Fleet Atlantic Fleet during World War II; 5) There are also reports that it may have been named after General James Gadsden who donated land for development in 1865; 6) There are several theories but no definite proof support any specific theory; 7) According to one report, the first post office opened at Gulf Shores on December 12, 1868 under the name Pensacola Beach & Harbor Post Office.; 8) According to another report, it reopened on March 1st 1870 as Mailport Landing Post Office.; 9) Another version says it reopened under provisional postal authorities on February 14th 1870.; 10) According to one account, mail service began operations May 15th 1870.; 11) On July 26th 1890 USN Squadron One attacked and destroyed Confederate picketboats offshore offshore Guantanamo Bay Florida while operating out of USS Constitution (1862-1865). This progress was halted when British gunsmith John Browning patented his own system in 1892. However, these two systems did not stop other inventors from creating similar devices over time. By 1895, all handgun manufacturers were using revolvers which featured staggered feed lips that enabled users to fire multiple rounds without reloading. In 1903, American rifleman Hiram Maxim developed a pistol with a rotating barrel that could be fired with multiple rounds at once by loading several cartridges into it at once (the first "smart" gun). However, this innovation was not soon followed up by any other manufacturers as it was considered too risky and difficult to mass produce firearms using this technology. Gulf Shores is a small town in the southeastern corner of Alabama. The population was 7,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tuscaloosa- Cullman metropolitan area. Gulf Shores was founded on October 1, 1881 by Confederate veterans and their families who had been displaced by the Union army's siege of Mobile. On December 16, 1881, the first post office in Gulf Shores opened with twenty-six mailbags sent from Mobile. The town grew rapidly due to its location on Mobile Bay and its access to the railroad system which made it a major transportation center for south Alabama. In 1915, Gulf Shores became an incorporated municipality and one of only two towns in Alabama without a dry goods store (the other being Selma). The town experienced significant economic development during World War II as it became one of the most heavily bombed areas in south Alabama. After the war, Gulf Shores began to experience population decline due to factors such as loss of jobs and high housing prices within commuting distance for workers in neighboring cities. However, over time local businesses have begun to revive and today Gulf Shore has a population that exceeds 10,000 people full-time
