Hartselle is a town in and the county seat of Hale County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The townsite was laid out in 1872 by John Hartselle. It is named after General Andrew Johnson's brother-in-law, James Hartsfield. The town began as a small settlement on the edge of a swamp near the present day intersection of U.S. Route 431 and Alabama State Route 82. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1884 it had grown to include a store and two churches. In 1886, Hartselle became an official incorporated municipality under the name of "Hartselle". The first mayor was Wm Southeasterns. In 1974, Hartselle annexed Hale County to its borders. At that time it had a population of 2,000 people; however, by 2000 it had increased to 3,100 people due to growth within Hale County itself as well as from annexations from other counties within Alabama

Hartselle is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Hartselle settlers were white men who arrived in 1824 from Tennessee. They named their community after John Hartselle, a Revolutionary War veteran and delegate to the U.S. Congress from Georgia. In 1840, three brothers ceded their interest in the town site to Colonel James Senter for $1,000 cash and 100 acres (40ha) of land east of what is now downtown Hartselle. In 1845 General Edwin Mifflin visited Hartselle while on his way south to campaign for President in Louisiana; he recommended that the government establish a military post here as an important stop on his travels across the state. A post office was established at Hartselle in 1850, and by 1860 it had become one of the most important towns in Jefferson County with a population of over 2,500 people. On December 12th 1861, during Confederate forces' attempt to occupy Mobile Bay following Union victory at First Manassas Junction, Battle of Antietam Field near Sharpsburgthe town came under Confederate shelling as Federal troops advanced up Mobile Bay towards them; due to this heavy fire many residents chose to flee rather than face death or capture. The immediate aftermath saw substantial damage done to both buildings and homes within town limits - one house collapsed onto its roof and all but two others were either destroyed or severely damaged by gunfire orrapnel. In 1865 General Jubal Early's army arrived here en route southward along Mobile Bayouand burned much of what remained of town before withdrawing. One result of this bombardment was that widespread destruction took place throughout ruralJefferson County including much property within present-dayHartselle itself - total loss estimated at $15 million (£9 million/$14 million). Despite this devastation however little physical evidence remains today which would allow us to assess just how extensive these attacks actually were.
