In Helena, Alabama, the knife industry is a long and proud history. The area has been home to Knifemakers since the 1800s and today, some of the most well-known knivesmiths in the country are located here. One of the first knifemakers in Helena was John Hogg, who started making knives in 1827. His knives were used by farmers and hunters for food and shelter. Helena, Alabama is a town located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. Helena is one of the oldest settlements in Tuscaloosa County and has been continuously inhabited since 1819. The first settler in Helena was John Crain. He and his family moved to the area from Mobile, Alabama in 1819. Helena was incorporated as a town on December 5, 1857 by ordinance of the Territorial Legislature. It became an official city on October 3, 1907. The Helena Independent School District serves students from pre-K through 12th grade in both public and private schools within its boundaries. The Helena Downtown Business District includes four anchor stores: Supermarket Plus (formerly Kmart), Safeway/Giant Eagle, Jiffy Lube/Lumberyard Warehouse & Center and Home Depot Pharmacy which opened its doors in 1957 and continues to serve as the district's anchors today; also included are several small businesses located near downtown that contribute to the economic vitality of the community including Checkers N' Chicks Barbecue & Grill (founded 1945), Weavers Coffee House (founded 1934) and Burt Reynolds Boulevard Services Inc., a government services company that provides waste removal services for various properties around town including City Hall and most of downtown's hotels - all three businesses are considered anchor tenants of downtown."
