Helena, Alabama is a small town located in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is named after General James Hogg who was captured and held as a prisoner at the fort here in 1810. The town was officially founded on December 3, 1881 by J.C. Payne and his wife Anna Payne, both natives of Scotland who had come to America to escape religious persecution there during the early part of the 19th century. The town's population swelled from about 100 people in 1881 to 2,500 by 1907 according to US census records. In 1905, Helena became one of the first towns in Alabama to be self-governing with its own government and school system. The city limits were expanded in 1959 when Mobile County was formed from portions of Montgomery County including Helena and other smaller communities within its boundaries

Helena, Alabama is a small town in Choctaw County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1819 by John C. Shelby and named for Helena, Italy. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. Helena is located on the Choctaw River. The town was originally laid out as a village and had a school, post office, church, storehouse, and two blacksmiths until it became a town in 1881. At that time the only industry in the town was farming; however, since then Helena has become known for its annual Tulip Festival which takes place in May each year. The first permanent white settler to reside in Helena was John Clements who arrived with his family from Georgia in 1820. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and conducted agriculture until 1830 when he moved to what is now Westville while his wife stayed behind to tend to their farmstead. One of John Clunes' sons also settled here around this time and operated a general store before moving eastward into Mobile County where he died about 1865 aged 85 years old (his son's death record says "aged 85"). In 1819 Jesse Jameson came across the Choctaw River from Tennessee looking for land to purchase and he entered into agreements with three other men: David Fenton (from Kentucky), Thomas McNairy (a native of Maryland), and William Hargrave (of Virginia). On December 12th1819 they all traveled upriver together under cover of night along side six bateaux filled with goods bound for Memphis via Attala Bayou & Stroudsburg Canal-the so-called Great Mississippi Expedition by Jameson & Company! They reached Clarksville late that night after enduring difficult travel conditions including snowdrifts high enough to reach their horses' bridles! The following day they met commissioners from East Tennessee who were interested in purchasing some of Jameson's land but not yet able to buy it because of state law limiting purchases to slaves! After hearing more about their adventures that day than they ever wanted to know they disembarked their boats at Clarksville next morning just as General Andrew Jackson's forces were arriving on horseback to begin raiding Indian villages near presentday Monroe City! On January 6th1820 two Cherokee Indians were killed by party led by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest during an attack on Fort Donelson just outside of Clarksville – one event which helped spur President Andrew Johnson towards taking military action against Confederate forces at Fort Sumter less than three weeks later!! In response Governor Ross Peebles issued an order forbidding any white men within five miles of Clarksville from leaving without Leave!!! This resulted in many people being stranded overnight inside Clarksville as there wasn't room on the buses transporting them back home………..As word spread about this incident local citizens quickly began building homes outside of Clayton County limits!! Jesse Jameson convinced four others--John Stephenson (a planter from Marshall County), Jeremiah Dixon (a trader/carpenter from Etowah County), George Washington Smith (a musician/lawyer) & Ebenezer Holmes—to join him aboard his ship Jupiter opposite Memphis on February 16th1820 while still under orders not to leave Clarksville!!! These seven individuals set off downriver singing "Oh Canada" as they sailed past various plantations along the way!!!! On reaching civilization ashore at New Orleans Rear Admiral Nicholas Biddle ordered them put ashore there immediately!!!!! There would be no further attempt by them or anyone else associated with that venture ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
