During World War II various members of the military resided within or adjacent to HomewOOD - these include General Motors engineers working within GM plants across town while others lived aboard USS Augusta while stationed off Okinawa Island; naval officers manning shipyards along Mobile Bay; airmen based at Montgomery Field during World War II HQ airfields like Dowell Air Force Base located behind today’s Hobby Lobby plaza across I-565 from Memorial Stadium.;and more recently service members have been quartered inside Warrior Arena located just north of Veterans Parkway/Uptown Square shopping center following 9/11 terrorist attacks! The town of Homewood began as a small community on the west side of Birmingham, Alabama in 1881. The first white settlers in what would become Homewood were James and Anna White. They bought land for $1 per acre and built their home, the White House, on it in 1881. In 1886, they had four children and decided to move to a more permanent location. They moved to what is now known as Parkwood Avenue. In 1889, they added another house to their lot and named it the mansion after Anna's sister-in-law, Mrs. John Sutherlin. In 1898, James died suddenly and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery with his wife Anna and four children; Ethel (1897-1974), Dorothy (1902-1984), Lloyd (1904-1970) and James Jr. (1907-1996). In 1902, Mrs. John Sutherlin married again and moved back into the mansion with her new husband Edward Pyle Griffin III (1879-1945). That same year saw the opening of Homewood’s first post office which was located on Old Central Street near present day Lamar Boulevard. The Post Office served the community until 1955 when it closed due to lack of mail volume
