Huntsville's history dates back to 1817 when Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Tennessee to what is now Huntsville to lead a military expedition against Spanish forces from Mobile Bay. After Jackson's victory over Spain at New Orleans in 1814, Surveyor General James Kenedy recommended that Huntsville be designated as the new seat of government for all of ALA due to its strategic location on Mobile Bay and its potential importance as a transportation hub for goods travelling between ALA and points eastward across coastal Mississippi and Louisiana. By 1820, however, only two buildings had been erected within town limits: The courthouse (which still stands today) and local jail/arsenal (now known as Lamar University). In 1830, new boundaries were drawn around town following recommendations made by Judge John Marshall Lawley Jr., who had served onAlabama's first Congressional district boundary commission which had redrawn portions of old Creek County into newly created Coffee County east of Warrior Mountain range; this area now includes much of downtown Huntsville. During this time period, very little economic activity took place within town limits save for harvesting subsistence crops close to where water resources were available such as rice paddies near present day Royston Avenue SW; these fields are now occupied by neighborhoods such as North Park/Civic Center/Westside/Chrysolite etc.. By 1840-1841 local mills began producing cloth but no coal or iron ore was found inside town limits so development ceased until 1865 when major veins were struck near current day Greenlaw Drive SW which led to construction of Hunt Valley Coal Mine later renamed Griffin Coal Mine #1 & #2 adjacent thereto - both still extant today (& operated by Griffin Mining Company). This mine produced significant amounts of coal until 1965 when it closed due to strikes among other mines operating at the same time throughout southeastern United States including those near Chattanooga TN (@GriffinCoalMine#3) & Springdale AR (@SpringdaleCoalMine) - both closed circa 1913-. In 1850s many Northern Europeans immigrated arrive here seeking work with advances being made in textile technologies especially cotton plantations southwestern US at that time Cotton production increased greatly from 1800 Lottery land lots awarded starting with 4 counties 3 townships – Jefferson Davis Iredell Catoosa Chickasaw Tombigbee Lincoln Richland Etowah Russell Blount Youngeate Cushing Colbert Stroud Tuscaloosa Quitman apportionment [ please provide more details ] Many Scots Presbyterians came hereabouts also looking emigration started mainly For Educational purposes Only some changed their religion back To Anglicanism Other groups like Germans (), Irish (), Swedes (), Italians ( ), Poles etc settled hereabouts also Some families converted especially Baptists & Methodists while others stayed Protestant most families eventually lost their Religion Most people left early Americas returned soon afterwards conflicts ensued with Mexico about disputed territory resulting in US Invasion
