Jasper, Alabama is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Jasper is the county seat of Bibb County. The town of Jasper was founded in 1858 by settlers from Ohio and Pennsylvania and named for General George Washington Holman who surveyed the area. It was moved to its current location on the western edge of Jasper in 1875 after soil investigations showed that it would be located too close to Mobile Bay for agricultural purposes. The fall of 1901 saw an influx of new residents as a result of railroad construction through Bibb County and Jasper's location made it one of the most popular destinations for tourists inAlabama during this time period. The first holster manufacturer in Jasper was Dufresne & Son which began manufacturing holsters there in 1887. By 1912 Dufresne had closed its business but other holster manufacturers continued to operate until World War II when all manufacturing ceased because holster design changed so much that handguns were no longer reliable with holsters that could not hold them securely against recoil or Twistlock closure systems. Today only a few legacy holster companies still manufacture holsters here in Jasper including Hogue Armory which produced Holsterama revolvers through the early 1990s before going out of business; Black Horse Armory which manufactured revolvers and pistols until they went out of business around 2000; and Glock USA which has been producing handguns here since 1984
