The cathedral was designed by architect J P Morgan & Son and features an onion-dome roof with steeple topped by an octagonal spire at 205 feet (60 m). In addition to its role as an agricultural center, Leeds also played an important role in developing local transportation systems and serving as a vital stopover for travelers travelling between Birmingham and Mobile Bayou downriver. During this time period there were no streetlights or other means of indicating who or what existed behind each house – residents relied solely on their environment for information about their surroundings.
