Automobiles became increasingly popular among middle-class residents within city limits as they replaced various forms of transportation including walking or biking before World War II when cars were more expensive than bicycles or foot power suitable for short trips around town. However, automobiles quickly grew prohibitively expensive for most citizens relative to other modes of transportation so only wealthier families continued using them for long distance travel outside city boundaries until about 1975 when gasoline prices began falling rapidly throughout most North America due primarily to OPEC oil embargo regulations designed to reduce American exports During Hurricane Katrina on August 29 2005 Mobile experienced one of its worst natural disasters with widespread damage and loss of life although much effort has been made since then through emergency response preparedness exercises conducted throughout Gulf Coast states (e.g., Mississippi) that have resulted in increased collaboration between state agencies

Mobile was founded in 1821 by the brothers James and John Montgomery. The town was named for Prince Maurice of Tuscany, who had come to Alabama in 1819 to explore new lands. In 1830, they moved their business to what is now downtown Mobile, where they became one of the city's most important merchants. The Montgomery family played an important role in both political life and business throughout Mobile County until its merger with Duval County in 1868. The first railroad reached Mobile from Tennessee in 1845, making it easy for farmers and entrepreneurs to bring goods into the city. early growth within mobile led some residents to nickname the "Ebenezer Keys" because of all of the land that lay within walking distance of every house or store! By 1850,Mobile had over 2,000 residents and boasted three hotels: one operated by Judge Waddell; another by Fenton Keyes; and still another by Jno Crain (later Mayor Haines). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction policies set out by President Ulysses S.
