In 1817, Captain James Bowles erected a small tower on East Bayou Road just south of what is now Gulf Shores Boulevard. This structure served as one of two pistol galleries built in Mobile during that year. The other gallery was located on Second Street north of State Market Place where today’s New Miami Library stands! Captain Bowles’ gallery became known as “TheBowles Tower” because he began operating it exclusively for firing pistols at targets! Captain Bowles also constructed another pistolgallery on Third Avenue east of King Street which served as training ground for new officers prior to their deployment to duty aboard ships or against Indians! This building has been preserved as part of downtownMobile’s historic district since 1907! In 1819, David Hogg erected a large manmade mound about 25 feet high with a circular depression surrounding it on North Bayou Road west of present day University Boulevard. This structure became known as TheHogg Target Complex after its inventor! Rifle shooters from across town congregated at this complex to fire at moving iron pieces set inside unique wooden frames which could be moved around by hand when needed! These target frames continued to be used until 1915 when they were replaced by steel structures! Unfortunately,TheHogg Target Complex was destroyed by fire some time after its erection! Today you can still find remnants of both structures left behind amongstramural evidence along North Bayou Road just east of US 31 (just past Houston Hall)! The Confederate forces responded by burning down the Union army’s arsenal. This event led to the founding of the local arms store, which was later renamed the Second Arsenal. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all military stores in Mobile closed because he believed that American firearms were being sold to Confederate troops in violation of United States neutrality laws. The Second Arsenal reopened under new management but closed again in 1868 due to financial difficulties. However, it reopened again in 1871 as part of a program to arm Civil War veterans with rifles and other firearms. From 1873 until 1899, Second Arsenal acted as a center for training riflemen for Confederate units during the war. During this time period, Second Arsenal also manufactured muskets and shotguns from scratch. After the war ended in 1865, Second Arsenal continued producing weapons until it finally closed its doors for good in 1898.

By 1800, there were more than 1,000 French colonists living in Mobile County. In 1802, Congress passed an act annexing Choctaw Nation to Oklahoma Territory; this leftMobile unincorporated territory separate from Alabama but within the federal government's Indian Territory. The first white person to settler in present-day Mobile was Nicholas Biddle who arrived with his family aboard USS "Dolphin" on October 16th 1811 during American rule of Florida and crossed into Spanish Florida looking for land grants Biddle's descendants continued settlement throughout much of antebellum America; some moved inland until they reached Louisiana On January 8th 1837 Daniel Webster announced he had selectedMobile as the site for a new national capital; on May 12th Washington ordered General Andrew Jackson to move Ulysses S Grant's army from Vicksburg towards Muscle Shoals so that Union General Winfield Scott could crossreduce New Orleans without fighting before returning to Chattanooga Scott ordered General Robert E Lee westward across Tennessee along Pulaski Road so that his army would approach Chilton Barracks (nearpresent day Knoxville) before turning north near Kingston Court House where Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked on July 20th 1863 destroying most buildings including all posts artillery Battery Payne near present day Enterprise
