In 1836, investors organized a cotton plantation called White Sulphur Creek near present day Huntsville with 6,000 acres (24 km²). The men worked 12 hours every day for 60 days/week planting seeds while their women labored harvesting the crop; they then took delivery of goods that they sold at home or traded with other plantations across South Carolina and Georgia before shipping it east to marketplaces in New Orleans and Baltimore where it was distributed among consumers. Cotton production rapidly increased during this time due to improved technology including irrigation systems and an increase in available land - making Moody one of the largest cotton towns west of Mobile Bay until mechanization began displacing human labor beginning in the early twentieth century

Moody, Alabama was founded in 1818 by the brothers John and James Moody. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had led the U.S. military in the Mexican-American War. The Moodys were farmers and their first store was built on a small farm that they shared with six other families. In 1827, Moody moved his family to what is now Birmingham, Alabama and began trading goods from his home market. In 1830, Moody opened a store on Broadway in downtown Birmingham. This business became one of the most successful in town and soon became known as "the Place Where All the Real Business Happened." In 1836, Moody bought land at what is now Goodyear Stadium for $4,000 and started building an important cotton gin there which he named after himself - Moody's Cotton Gin. In 1840, Moody helped found Montgomery County (now Alabamian) and served as its first county commissioner. He also served as president of both the United States Bank in Birmingham and First National Bank of Tuscaloosa (later Second National Bank). From 1850 until his death in 1865, he was also a member of the Alabama Senate. After his death, longlasting feuds between members of his family led to many changes withinAlabama politics throughout much of Reconstruction Era America.
