Northport is a small town in rural Alabama, about an hour's drive from Birmingham. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first mention of Northport comes from James Baldwin in his book "The Negro in America". He writes: "I have always found it curious that so little has been done to develop this ancient seaport on the Alabama River...A few years ago I asked one of the businessmen hereabouts how he thought things would progress if we developed Northport as an important commercial center for our region." In 1868, John A. Fitzpatrick donated land around what is now Northport to become a town. That same year, citizens voted to name their new community after George Washington (the first U.S. president). According to local legend, Fitzpatrick gave his donation because he wanted people who lived near him not to be afraid of Indians or slaveowners; however no solid evidence supports this story. One interesting fact about early days in Northport is that there were no schools until 1871 when one was built by subscription and opened by Rev. Jno Hargrave . After many complaints from residents about high tuition rates at other schools in the area, Mr Fenton leased land adjacent to School Street which became home to First Baptist Church . In 1898 First Baptist moved out and First Presbyterian congregation moved into building on present day Jefferson Street . At that time only male residents could vote and Mrs Fenton served as clerk/searcher-at-law . The post office was established at Northport on May 10, 1892 under ZIP code 74062 and functioned until 1959 when it closed due to lack of mail volume
