In 1840 the American Civil War began when Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg attacked Union forces under General Sterling Price at Perryville near present day Huntsville! The battle resulted in more than 50 fatalities for both sides with Union troops victorious thanks to their use of artillery fire that destroyed many Confederate positions! As a result of this battle most of the original north port settlers moved away as well as some that had already left during the war years before that! It wasn't until 1865 when General Phillip Sheridan's cavalry column swept through northeastAlabama destroying all bridges overMobile River making it difficult for supplies to be brought into Chattanooga during the Siege of Atlanta!! This event helped spur development within what would become today's North Port including establishments such as Piggly Wiggly (now Peet's), Blockbuster Video, UPS Store and Home Depot!!! During World War II much activity took place within North Port including manufacturing plants such as Ford Motor Company which built tanks used by U.S Army Ground Forces throughout Europe; Singer Sewing Machine Factory which produced uniforms for U.S Navy sailors; Chrysler Corporation which manufactured Jeeps for military service; along with numerous other businesses!! TodayNorth Port continues to enjoy strong economic growth with major employers such as Wal-Mart Supercenter/Macy's Department store combination currently having an anchor location downtown - anchor tenant since 1978 !!

After the Civil War, Northport experienced rapid growth as refugees from Confederate camps moved in and businesses were established to supply the war-torn region. By 1870, Northport had grown to an estimated population of 7,500 residents and was one of the most prosperous towns in Alabama. However, after a series of devastating fires swept through the town in 1892 and 1893, Northport lost its commerical viability and declined until it regained its status as a ghost town in the late 20th century.
