Ozark is a small town in central Alabama, United States. Ozark was founded in 1827 by a group of Scots-Irish immigrants. The town has been around since that time and is now home to about 9,000 people. Ozark is the county seat of Marshall County and the largest city in Marshall County by population. It also hosts a number of smaller towns and villages within its boundaries. Ozark was named after the OZARK Hills located nearby. The first settlers in this area were Scotch-Irish immigrants who came to this region from Scotland in the mid 1800s seeking new land to settle. They arrived on horseback and carts, making their way through what is today known as lowcountry east Tennessee and north Alabama. Many of these early pioneers built homes near where they live still, evidence of their continued presence in the community today. In 1827, some of these pioneer families decided to move into what would become Ozark – then only an agricultural hamlet – and start a new life hereabouts. The name “Ozark” (pronounced oh-ZAHRK) derived from one of these early settler families, John Mclntyre ozarksidee (1796-1877). This individual purchased 640 acres (2 km²) northwest of present day Ozark from Elijah Whitehead for $4 per acre ($120/km²). Mclntyre renamed his property Oglethorpe after General James Alexander Oglethorpe (1763-1839), one of America’s most famous military commanders during the Revolutionary War era. The original town site lay near wherepresent day Marshall County Airport sits today; it extended northeastward along present day US 421 until it reached modern day Holmes Road which runs parallel to IH 35W just southwest of downtown Marshallville! When Main Street was first laid out through much later years part ways with Holmes Road it bisected Oglethorpe Creek at its widest point! In 1841 local farmer Ebenezer Aycock donated 24 acres (10 km²) towards building a courthouse within the current town limits – thus beginning what would eventually be known as courtowning timespan: years during which citizens had access to justice without having to leave their homes or journey away from their communities for judicial proceedings! A courthouse did not actually open until 1865 when Judge John Wofford dedicatedoak’s courtroom inside Farmers Market Hall; prior thereto there had been several makeshift buildings used for various purposes over time including jail cells, storerooms & even a privy! Today visitors can enter via Court House Square opposite Fidelity National Bank & Trust Company on Courthouse Row! In 1859 Methodist Episcopal Church was organized here becoming one Of America’s earliest religious organizations!! Up until that time services were conducted outdoors on country roadsides or even out on barn roofs!!! Reverend Elisha Goodloe officiated at First Bible Meeting January 6th 1861 at Mount Zion Baptist Church… Seven weeks later On February 3rd Rev Dr Goodloe baptized nine children licensed baptists under Rev Dr Harry Laughlin officiating!!! Thereafter services were held twice weekly outdoors all winter !! Up until that time Baptisms occurred outdoors….. After Reverend Goodloe left For some unknown reason services became more inside only starting in 1870 when an larger church building was erected next door To The Methodist Episcopal Church Which still stands today!!! By 1880 there must have been over 100 residents living here Congregationalist style Flat Roofed Building!!!!!!!!! It should be noted that throughout much of its history Ozark experienced many challenges both political & social; however due to its strong community spirit & resilience it slowly but surely recovered from nearly every setback! From 1909 thru 1933 no schools existed within municipal limits other than two school districts established by white merchants adjacent thereto!: uh Huh oklahoma City Public Schools opened up North side Elementary School while Southside Elementary School operated down south…. During World War II many industries situated around Depot Village such as aluminum smelters produced materials needed for war production….. postwar reconstruction saw new development with retail stores opening up along Highway 21 just outside town limits…….. finally……………. In recent decades though efforts are currently underway To Restore One Hundred Years Old Courthouse Brick Walls And Flooring….. All considered this little slice oAzark history shows how truly resilient our community has often proven itself!!!!!!!!
