Pell City is a small town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. Pell City is located on U.S. Highway 431, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Pensacola and 26 miles (41 km) south of Mobile. The community was founded in 1892 by John Witherspoon Pell and his wife Sarah Ann Hardesty Pell as a depot on the Tallapoosa River for shipping logs from the nearby woods to Pensacola for processing into lumber. After one year, the company moved its operations to what is now Pell City's downtown district. The first post office in town was established in 1893; it closed in 1907 because of prohibitionism in Alabama at that time. The name "Pell City" was chosen because it sounded like "penny". In 1901, when a new railroad line arrived through Escambia County, trackage rights were purchased from the Gulf Railroad Company and the village began receiving mail from Mobile and other eastern cities via the new tracks. By 1906, when local logging had ended and milling had resumed, Pell City had become an important node on this railroad; its many stores and services helped make it an attractive place to live for locals as well as commuters who traveled through this area to reach their jobs in Mobile or Pensacola. In 1916, when a new courthouse and jail were built just north of town center after years of planning by then-Mayor Gilbert Hinson Sr., Pell City became known statewide for its architecture – most notably Pella Civic Building (now part of Pensacola State University), which still stands today despite numerous renovation projects over the years). Just prior to World War II, much of downtown shopping district around Main Street between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue was developed as Naval Air Station Enterprise (later Maxwell Air Force Base). This led to increased business activity along Main Street but also created some traffic problems since most businesses were located near Navy property rather than on main streets within town limits."
