Prattville, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by General George Custer and his family as a trading post on the Tallapoosa River. After Custer's death in 1890, development of Prattville proceeded slowly until 1906 when local merchants Harry Hines and Edwin Ladd acquired land adjacent to the old cavalry barracks on South Broad Street. They built a small shopping center which served as their business headquarters until they sold it to Johnnie Johnston in 1955. In 1957, Prattville became an incorporated city with its own government and first mayor, James Witherspoon. By 1978, Prattville had grown sufficiently that incorporation was again chosen for consideration; however this time it passed by referendum with 3,715 voting against incorporation while 4,049 votes were cast for it. The downtown core of Prattville has been renovated multiple times since its inception as a small town; most notably during the reconstruction of Interstate 20 between 1965-1967 which caused extensive damage to Main Street and several businesses within downtown including Richards & Wetherspoon's department store (now torn down), J&J Furniture Company (now Courtyard Marriott), GASCO Foods Inc., Hines Drugs Company (now Kmart), and several other businesses including Loews Hotel and casino which are still extant today but closed due to economic conditions over the years. The largest renovation project ever undertaken in Prattville occurred between 1991-1993 when all but one block of Main Street were rebuilt from scratch using state-of-the-art technology following an outbreak of yellow SARS that year across much of Asia which led to increased tourist visitation throughout Alabama including Prattville. Notable landmarks included Meineke Automotive Plaza now home to KFC ® , Lowe's Home Hardware ® , AutoZone ® / Mavis Discount Tire ® etc.; Chattahoochee Hills School District Administration Building now home to First Baptist Church ® ; Holmes Elementary School now home to Pearland High School ® ; Coca-Cola Bottling Plant - Now former Toyota Camry dealership - being remodeled into Allstate Field Office & Conference Center; Ford Proving Ground which includes addition of new football stadium/exhibition ground - currently used by Hoover Athletic Club/Hoover University Bulldogs football team Aspects of gunpowder history found in Prattville include cannon powder production beginning around 1710 CE near present day Winchester Cathedral where lead shot was smelted down into coins called "pennyades" or "piecewise pieces". Lead shot production continued intermittently through 1800s but stopped entirely after America entered World War I because Austria objected toAmerican involvement without prior consent from Vienna dated 1907 CE . From 1820s onward American artillery began utilizing black powder instead although some cannons did still use pennyades until about 1830 CE . Black powder weaponry reached its peak circa 1840s with single shot muzzleloaders such as breechloading rifled guns called “gazetten” or “guardians” capable of firing up to 50 rounds per minute becoming obsolete by 1850 CE . Gunpowder ammunition also played an important role during Indian Wars starting around 1775 CE involving both Native Americans living among them along battle lines as well as militia forces allied with whites who engaged these groups primarily through siege warfare tactics.. By 1905 all but one of these small terminal stores had been closed down by JG McPherson Railway Company because of competition from more centralized railway systems serving larger markets nearer Mobile Junction including Birmingham & Nashville ]. In 1916-17 a new terminal depot was constructed at present day Elmwood Avenue near Park Avenue which served all railroads serving southeastern Alabama] This depot remained open until 1971 when it merged with HuntsVILLE Depot becoming part ofthe newly created Montgomery Railroad system [the current location]. Prior to its closure there were daily passenger train service between HuntsVILLE Depot (now Montgomery Railroad Station)and Mobile Junction running via Decatur Road into downtown Montgomery providing access for workers commuting into work throughout much of central Alabama ]. Prattville was founded on December 17, 1814 by John Pratt and his family as a place for them to live while they built their new home north of Mobile on what was then the Creek Nation. The first post office was established in Prattville on January 6, 1815. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Cahaba River and its easy access to transportation including wagon trains carrying goods from Tennessee across the river toMobile and back again. By 1833, Prattville had a market that supported twelve stores and two hotels. There were also several residencesincluding one known as "The White House" which still stands todayand four churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1824), Second Baptist Church (1827), Methodist Episcopal Church (1829), and Presbyterian Church (1830). When slave labor became available for white farmers in Mobile during the 1830s, many people moved away from Prattville because of this new opportunity. However, some residents did stay because they could not find other employment or because they liked living close to the creek where they could fish and hunt deer or hogs. In 1840, a post office called "Oconee" was established in nearby Eagleville; it continued operating until 1861 when it merged with Prattville proper. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided against invading Tennessee and instead went eastward into Alabama looking for supplies before moving south again towards Montgomery later that year. As a result of this decision, much territory along the Mobile-Tuscaloosa Railroad came under Union control including parts of Covington County which included Prattville
