Saraland is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. Saraland is on the Gulf Coast of Alabama and along the Mobile River. It is located in the center of Jefferson County and extends east to west for about two miles. The first mention of Saraland took place in 1798 when Captain James Wilkinson mentioned it while travelling down the Mobile River. By 1802, there were nine structures in Saraland: one store, three homes, and one cotton gin. By 1805, there were fifteen buildings including a jail and post office. In 1825, John Auld built his plantation here which included several slave quarters as well as a mill which he used to produce flour for local markets. In 1829- 1830 Govt Surveyor Asbury visited Saraland and found that all but 4% of the property was owned by Negroes who raised crops or cattle for their own benefit with only 5% being used for slaves. He recommended that plantations be divided into owner-occupied land (about 60%), tenant-owned land (about 30%), and public domain (10%). In 1840 state officials reported that 7% of residents were colored citizens while 16% were white citizens and 54% were slaves; however by 1850 this figure had increased to 50%. During Reconstruction following the Civil War general Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his band of Confederate soldiers across Alabama towards what would become known as Selma to ride into Montgomery to demand disfranchisement of African Americans living behind Confederate lines – an event which finally led to their emancipation on April 9th 1865 within days under General Robert E Lee’s orders after protracted combat near downtown Montgomery known as “Bloody Monday” . This event set off a firestorm throughout much of America with Southerners accusing Northerners of sacrificing black lives for nothing more than political gain – an accusation levelled especially against President Abraham Lincoln who many felt let Northern blacks die without consequence . In 1865 Clarissa Hogg Sweetland purchased 400 acres adjacent to present day Saraland from Howell Cobb Sr., father of Congressman Howell Cobb III who later became US Senator from Georgia.. From then until her death in 1924 she managed various aspects including housing development/maintenance/farmers market redevelopment/religious services at her estate called Sweetland Park.. Upon her deathher estate passed through various hands including ownership by descendants of Mrs Hogg herself before passing back into private hands until 1984 when it reverted back onto government hands again .. Prior to its current ownership Bowen Museum has been operated out OF STATE BY THE JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION FROM 1959 thru 1984 WITH NO CONSTRUCTION OR OPERATIONS .. The museum now houses artifacts from early history thru modern times
Siraland was founded in 1819 by John Saraland and his brother, James. It is the oldest community in Alabama. The first post office in Saraland was established on February 14, 1821. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s thanks to its location at the mouth of the Mobile River and its natural resources. By 1836, Saraland had a population of over 100 people. In 1846, after Alabama became a state, Saraland became an incorporated city with a population of 2,000 people. In 1865, following Reconstruction (the end of the American Civil War), the city was renamed Birmingham and lost much of its importance due to industrialization in Alabama. However, it retains some cultural significance today because it is home to two major universities: University of SouthwesternAlabama and Alabama State University.
