Scottsboro is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,043 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-region. The first white man to set foot on what is now Scottsboro was John Wesley Dobson in 1875. He built a cabin and named it "Dobson's Cabin." The first known settlement in Scottsboro was made by farmers and stockmen who prospected for coal near present day Mount Pleasant. They named their settlement "Biloxi" after the city in Mississippi where they mined coal. In 1881, while mining coal at Biloxi, operators of a electric locomotive hit a Mine Train carrying ore from nearby Scottsboro and derailed; all of the men on board were killed or seriously injured. This event led to an increase in tourism to Scottsboro which attracted businessmen such as J C Prentice who opened a store and hotel there in 1903 called Live Oak Lodge & Spa. In 1911, cottonseed oil heir Roy Moore became ill with Bright’s disease and traveled to Huntsville to see his doctor Dr James Hightower whom he had seen on television program House Makers (1909). After being treated successfully at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Moore returned home but died suddenly two weeks later at age 38 from complications from Bright's disease brought about by traveling too much without rest or food. His death rekindled interest in exploration of this area for oil and gas potential because royalties from leases acquired during his ownership would have been payable even if he never lived to receive them. In 1922 when John F Kennedy won the Ulysses S Grant–nominated U nation presidential election over incumbent Thomas Ewing Jr., many people believed that he might be CIA running mate because both men were Irish American Catholics raised near Louisville, Kentucky; however no evidence could be found linking either man with any intelligence services during their careers as politicians or afterwards. However some people do believe that due to Kennedy's Catholicism some members of conspiracy circles may have linked him with secret operations conducted by right-wing elements inside the Central Intelligence Agency since his teenage years (eclipsing previous examples such as Senator Joseph McCarthy).
