Selma is the only city in Tuscaloosa County and it is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. The town was founded by white men on May 10, 1867 as a small community on the east bank of the river Caney. It was named for Dr. John Fenton Selma who had moved from Montgomery to be near his family's plantation in Mobile before being appointed Surgeon General of Alabama in 1865. A post office called Selma was established in 1868, and remained operational until 1906. In 1896, black people seeking desegregation activities began to move into Selma from all over the state of Alabama with some coming as early as April 4 that year when local activist James Weldon Johnson organized what would become known as "The White Citizens' Committee" to protest Jim Crow segregation laws across most southern states outside of Tennessee and Mississippi where African Americans were still enslaved. That December 5th night after an aborted attempt by whites to clear a crosswalk at nearby highway 8 close to Railroad Street so buses could stop without obstructing traffic and pick up black passengers, three nights later three cars filled with people carrying Confederate flags rolled down Highway 8 towards Selma; one crashed into a tree leaving five dead (the cause remains unknown), while twelve more were arrested and sent back north pending trial which never took place because charges against them were dropped due to lack of evidence or witness testimony against them. On October 24th 1870 Henry Kelley opened Gulf Coast Cotton gin & mill at present day Old Mill Road and connected it with railroad leading southward from Selmas storehouse; this made cotton production possible for first time since 1836 along Mobile River valley floor area reaching Mobile BayToday many old buildings still standing are together associated with early mills such as Gulf Coast Cotton gin & mill
