Selma's history dates back to 1875 when it was incorporated as a town. The name "Selma" comes from the Choctaw word "selma", meaning "place where you can get water." The town grew slowly until World War II when Selma became an important military and industrial center due to its location on the Chilton Highway and its proximity to Camp White Sands in Montgomery. After the war, Selma experienced a rapid growth period with population increases of over 100%. However, many residents moved away during the 1970s-1980s because of economic decline in Tuscaloosa County and increased competition for jobs in surrounding communities. Since 2000, residents have lobbied for city status which has been denied multiple times by the Tuscaloosa County Board of Commissioners because of zoning regulations that forbid cities within county boundaries from having more than 15% of their population serve as students in high school or more than 25% in employment and commerce. In November 2006 City Status was granted to Selma after ten years of local lobbying by citizens and businesses including establishment such as Walmart Supercenter and Sweetwater Brewing Company

Selma is a city in and the county seat of Selma County, Alabama, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. Selma is located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama near Mobile Bay. It was founded by planters in 1859 as a small town named for Sequoyah City, Oklahoma Territory. The name "Selma" came from a Creek word meaning "place where seagulls roost." The first courthouse in Selma was built in 1860 and served as the justice of the peace court until 1875. In that year, Legislature passed an act providing for a town to be organized within its limits and naming it for General Denton Malsbury, who had earlier fought with Confederate forces against Union troops during the American Civil War. The town charter was issued on December 1, 1875 and approved by vote of the citizens one day later. On January 3, 1876, General Malsbury became president of Alabama with jurisdiction over all land east of Mobile Bay including Selma. As part of his duties as president, he designated Selma as the capital ofAlabama. A schoolhouse and jail were both erected in Selma soon after its incorporation into government and remain standing to this day. In 1907 legislation provided for a quota system in which white residents would be allotted one-seventh (11 percent)of all voting ballots cast while black residents would receive only sixteenth (3 percent)of all votes statewide; however this measure failed to pass muster with many white voters who saw it as discriminatory against their community's black majority. In order to further challenge these measures through peaceful protests led by African Americans throughout southern Alabama during World War II efforts were made to gain Voting Rights Act Congressional approval though no such action was ever taken; however African Americans did eventually obtain full legal rights under US Constitution effective February 14th 1964 when President John F Kennedy signed Executive Order No.: 10988 giving them those rights nationally effective July 5th 1960
