Selma, Alabama is a town located in the east side of Montgomery County, Alabama. It was established in 1892 as a white settlement on the site of what is now Selma high school. The first African American to live in Selma was Moses Brownell. In 1965, after two years of peaceful protests by civil rights leaders and young Black militants led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Selma's municipal council voted to integrate all its businesses and public buildings with whites only. This event is often misspelled " integration ", and actually refers to the decision of a municipal council to allow restaurants and other businesses open to both races while preventing public housing from being integrated. Since then, Selma has seen some heavy fighting between law enforcement officers and Black militants (usually associated with the Ku Klux Klan) which has left many residents scared for their safety at night or during hostage situations.
