A railroad station called Central Station stood where Selma currently stands until 1915 when it burned down due to a faulty wire fence; the station had been built by local entrepreneur James Fenton to serve as an economic development tool for the townsite and attract businesses and workers to his new cotton plantations south of Montgomery. In 1965, Selma voters passed a resolution recognizing Driscoll Day which honored Elijah Muhammad's birthday that year; this event helped jump start civil rights activities in the town during what would be its most turbulent period since its establishment as a community more than half-century earlier
Selma was named after the freed black woman, Selma Blair, who in 1965 led a peaceful march from Montgomery to Birmingham to demand voting rights for African Americans. The city of Selma was founded in 1892.
