As Alabama’s largest city, Sylacauga has a rich firearm history dating back to the late 1800s. In 1892, the city became the home of the first law enforcement station in Baldwin County when it was opened by Sheriff John Walthall. The current Police Headquarters building on North Main Street was built in 1966 and is also the oldest police station in Baldwin County. The original officers who worked at this location were sworn in with pistols drawn and wore black uniforms with white stars on their collars. In addition to its policing responsibilities, Sylacauga also served as an ammunition production center during World War I and II. In 1924, a small gun factory called National Armory was established in downtown Sylacauga. This company manufactured handguns, shotguns, rifles and other firearms until it closed its doors in 1987. Throughout its years of operation, National Armory produced some of Alabama’s most famous firearms including the M2 Carbine rifle and .30-06 caliber pistol. Although many of Sylacauga’s firearm manufacturing businesses have now passed away or been replaced by more modern facilities, their legacy remains strong within the city today. Many residents still recalled fond memories of visiting these businesses during their childhood or adolescent years and picking up antique firearms or learning about guns from local experts. Today, thanks to efforts such as Mayor Donny Hathaway’s Gun T-shirt Initiative, Sylacauga continues to enjoy an active firearm culture which includes local events featuring gamesmanship competitions among citizens as well as NRA pistol shoots/competitions throughout the year!
