It is part of the Huntsville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1837 by soldiers of General Andrew Jackson's army who were on their way to Mobile to help suppress a slave rebellion there. The first white settler in what would become Sylacauga was John Pritchard. He and his family arrived from Georgia on July 10, 1837, and started a small grocery store next door to the First Baptist Church which served as the nucleus of what would become Sylacauga. In 1840, Pritchard married Anna Moore and they moved into what became known as "The Plantation" which he built on land that had been donated by James Denny (founder of Denny's chicken restaurant). They had six children: John (1841-1911), Anna Fannie (1843-1912), Franklin C(1845-1925), Flora M(1849-1932), William H.(1851-1936) and James W.(1853-1920). Their home stood until it was destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1881, trustees of Trinity Episcopal Church organized an agricultural society with the purpose of acquiring land for church building purposes; this led to the founding of White Sulphur Springs Academy which became one of Sylacaga's most prominent educational institutions. The first post office opened at Sylacauga on November 12, 1881; it remained open until December 1, 1907 when it changed its name to Huntsville with Mrs. Loyd succeeding Mrss Atherton as Postmistress In 1906, Representative Howell Cobb introduced legislation providing for education opportunities within reach for all citizens regardless of race or color; this led to establishment within Sylacuga High School as one Of America’s first integrated public high schools where African Americans also participated fully both during pre school years up through college level classes and also beyond upon graduation from high school By 1960, many businesses had closed down due largely to cost overruns associated with new technology such as television set production plants located just outside Huntsville proper while other nearby towns saw no increase in their populations despite similar growth rates while downtown Huntsville experienced significant gentrification throughout the late 1960s into much more upscale neighborhoods including Sylvania Park/Olde Towne around Interstate 20 east between Madison Street and Gadsden Street

After the war, Sylacauga experienced growth as an agricultural center while remaining relatively rural until becoming more urbanized after the mid-20th century. Today, Sylacauga remains a small town with a limited number of residents located primarily on East Street between Floyd Road and Buffalo Gap Road within walking distance of each other. The primary businesses include several farms that produce hay, cattle, chickens, eggs, applesauce (a type of apple sauce), soybeans (a type of bean), fresh fruit (pears/figs/plums/grapes),and cigarettes
In 1814, the Alabama Territory was created from parts of the Creek Nation. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson was appointed its first governor. The territory consisted of present-day Alabama and southern Mississippi. By 1819, the Alabama Territory had become a state.
