Sylacauga is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what would become Sylacauga was made on the north side of the river near present-day White Oak Road and Railroad Avenue in 1814 by Captain John Chilton and his family. In 1825, Colonel James Fenton established a small post here on an oxen farmstead that he had bought from Nicholas Metcalfe. In 1830, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded Mobile Bayou Baptist Church in what is now Sylacauga and donated land for its construction. The church's cornerstone was laid on November 5, 1830 by General Forrest himself. During the American Civil War (1865-1868), Confederate general Braxton Bragg passed through this area on his way to Chattanooga to join Confederate forces against Union troops under Ulysses S. Grant. On October 14, 1865, General Bragg's army came within sight of Sylacuga when he ordered Majors Rufus King and Dolphus Alexander to cross over WhiteOak Road into Union territory to warn antifederalists living near the town about potential military action coming their way; they failed to do so and were captured by Union troops soon afterwards. Afterthe war ended, many African Americans moved into what would become Sylacauga from other parts of Alabama as Reconstruction began in America following the Civil War. Many black men who had fought for Confederate forces were discharged or surrendered after being caught up in Reconstruction policies which aimed to rebuild society without any African Americans having any say in how it should function or be run. In 1871, James Worthy became one of only two white men elected as mayor of Mobile County after winning an open primary against incumbent Elias Boudinot Sr.. Worthy served two terms until his death during a fire at City Hall which destroyed most of downtown Mobile in 1886. During Worthy's term as mayor there were also several significant events such as passage of anti-lynching legislation known as "An act for the prevention of lynchings" which became law following his death & helped spur new efforts against racial violence throughout America; & annexation by Mobile County of Baldwin County which occurred December 1st 1880 making Sylacuga officially a county seat despite protests from local residents who saw it as nothing more than an unwarranted gift fromMobile County officials
