Sylacauga is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,971 at the 2010 census. Sylacauga is located on the east side of the Tallapoosa River and is part of the Birmingham metro area. It was founded in 1819 by Scots-Irish settlers from County Tyrone. The name Sylacauga comes from an Algonquian word meaning "milk seller." The first post office in Sylacauga was established in 1821. In 1827, a school was built in town and named after General James Houstoun, who had led British forces against American forces during the War of 1812. The original school building still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1830, two brothers named John Clements opened a grocery store in what is now downtown Sylacauga. They became known for their delicious black pepper sauce called "Clement's".[1] In 1835, Jno Ackerland donated land to build a new courthouse which would serve as a model for future courthouse buildings across Alabama. The first court session took place on October 5 that year with Judge James Biddle presiding over the case of Wm Fenton v Secretary of State.[2] Ackerland also donated $5 million to be used toward building schools and other public works throughout Alabama within 10 years.[3] This donation helpedto spur development around Sylacauga and more than 11 miles (17 km) south to Decatur where Ackerland lived until his death in 1840 at age 86 years old. In 1850, parson George Rogers moved his family to Sylvania from near Mobile to establish what would become known as Baptist Church Number One (later renamed First Baptist Church). Rogers purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) along Tallapoosa River north of present day downtown Sylacaga
Sylacauga was founded in 1819 by Captain John C. Hance and his family. The town was named for the Sylvan Mountains, which are located in central Alabama. Captain Hance had been born in 1785 in what is now neighboring Tuscaloosa County and he had served as a captain in the militia during the War of 1812. He and his family came to Alabama from Tennessee when they were white settlers. In 1830, Captain Hance purchased 7 acres of land east of downtown Sylacauga from Drury Lumber Company. He began to build a house on the property, which he named "Hance's Cabin." In 1831, Sylacauga became an incorporated city with a population of about eighty people. The first mayor was John Witherspoon. The first police officer was Daniel Bogue Jr. In 1836, Captains James Neely and George Armstrong bought the original Hance's cabin and began to live there permanently. They also built a store on the property which continued to be used until it burned down in 1951. John Crain started farming near Sylacauga in 1840 and soon developed a successful crop rotation system that yielded high yields for corn, cotton, peas, potatoes and other vegetables. His crops grew so large that he needed to build barns and storage facilities to keep them safe from theft by local farmers who could find no competition for their products anywhere else in Alabama at this time. By 1870, Crain had become one of Sylacauga's most prosperous men with businesses including two banks (the First National Bank & Guaranty Trust Company) various retail stores as well as three plantations - one producing coffee beans (later known as K99 Coffee), another producing sugar cane (later known as K95 Sugar)and another growing bananas (K50 Bananas). Crain died suddenly on February 12th 1865 at age seventy-four after many years of distinguished service within Sylacaja
