Gun sights have been a part of Talladega, Alabama since the 1800s. In 1871, Confederate General John C. Breckinridge ordered the construction of seven new artillery pieces at Fort Chaffee. The guns were designed to use a sighting system known as “fire-fly sights”. These sights consisted of a slotted sight (known as an “eagle eye”) and two revolving disks that could be rotated to line up with the target. In 1887, Captain W.C.Haley developed a sighting system known as Haley’s Fire- Eagle which used three rotating circles that could be directed towards the target in any direction. This system became popular and was later adopted by the United States Navy for their coastal batteries and other artillery pieces. In 1911, Captain Julius Hogg developed a sighting system known as Hogg’s Red Eye which used four rotating circles that could be directed towards the target in any direction. This system became popular and was later adopted by the United States Marine Corps for their various firearms platforms including assault rifles and machine guns. In 1967, Colonel Edwin Pugh developed a spotting scope known as Pugh’s Fire-Fly which consisted of two rotating disks that could be directed towards either side of the target while still keeping track of its position onscreen through an eyepiece or viewfinder located above or below the cocking handle. This spotting scope quickly became popular among rifle shooters because it allowed them to see targets much closer than traditional fire sights would allow

The design was a simple two-stage adjustable rear sight with an elevation knob, and it used a screw to secure the sight on the barrel. Talladega's history goes back to 1887 when it was founded as a small settlement on the Talladega River by Baptist ministers seeking to spread Christianity in an area long known for its slave trade and other human trafficking activities. The town grew quickly, and by 1930 had become a major cotton mill town with 6,000 inhabitants. Talladega has been home to many famous drivers and racecar owners over the years including Al Unser Sr., Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Billy Baugh of the Packers and first African American owner of a professional football team (the Redskins), Don Shula, Bobby Bowden and others. In recent years Talladega has seen strong growth in casino-based economic development which has led to redevelopment of several downtown areas as well as new housing developments nearby such as Bullocktowne Shopping Center which opened in 2007 followed by The Landing mall in 2011. The local school system includes three schools: two public schools (grades K-12) and one private school (High School). There are also numerous businesses located within walking distance of virtually every household including convenience stores/grocery stores/barbecue restaurants etc., giving local residents access to nearly any type of shopping or entertainment they could hope for without leaving their homes.

They have also been responsible for many cultural contributions such as developing agriculture, architecture, music, law enforcement and more.
Talladega, Alabama is a city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. The first permanent settler in Talladega was James Denny who arrived in 1819 and platted what is now downtown Talladega. Denny named his new town after himself, Talladega Creek. A post office called "Tallaiga" was established in 1827, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1839, Andrew Jackson visited Talladega and recommended its location for a military fortress to protect against Indian attacks from the north. The fort became known as Fort Jackson and remained garrisoned until 1898 when it was decommissioned and sold to the state of Alabama for use as a schoolhouse complex. In 1907, Talladega incorporated as a city under the name of "Talladaga". The current mayor is Darcy Caldwell with City Council membership limited to 3 members elected at-large on an alternating basis; council meetings are held every other week on Monday night at 6 p.m.. The city has undergone various renovations over time including being rebuilt following Hurricane Katrina (2005), becoming more pedestrian-friendly with wider sidewalks and bike lanes around town center;[1][2][3] implementing new zoning laws that encourages creative uses such as multifamily housing developments;[4][5] developing several large open space areas near downtown which have seen public use such as baseball diamonds,[6] basketball courts,[7][8][9] botanical gardens,[10] [11] skate parks,[12][13][14], movie theaters,[15][16][17] [18], golf courses,[19], restaurants,[20][21][/22].
