In Vestavia Hills, Alabama, there is a long and varied history of firearms. The first guns in this area were muzzleloading rifles, which were used by the military and hunting militias. Hammer developed a hammer-action pistol that was successful and allowed for easier handgun ownership than earlier methods. The popularity of handguns led to an increase in demand for ammunition; accordingly, both rifle manufacturers and Ammunition Manufacturers began producing shells specifically for handguns. By 1903, Vestavia Hills had become one of the leading firearms production areas in America. Vestavia Hills is a city located in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 12,023 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Alabama and the second-most populous city in Birmingham metropolitan area. Vestavia Hills is one of two cities (the other being Birmingham) that make up the Vestavia Hills Business Park, which has a total land area of 107 square miles (253 square kilometers). The park was developed by businessman Forrest Pogue and his wife Alma Pogue with help from their father, banker James A. Pogue Sr., to promote downtown Vestavia Hills as an economic center for central Alabama. The original town site on present-day Vestavia Hills was settled by farmers in 1875 and incorporated as a municipality on March 2, 1909. The name came from nearby "Valley Heights", which had been named for General JF Wilson's family home on Valley Springs Road about three miles east of the town site. The first post office opened in 1911 and remained open until it was closed under federal prohibition law in 1933; vestavahills@aol.com became the first known website address for Vestavia Hills after its opening. In 1963, Forrest Pogue II founded what would become known as Blue Ribbon Motorsports Inc., one of only a handful of successful small sports car dealerships throughout America at that time; today Blue Ribbon Motorsports remains headquartered in Vestavia Hills with more than 100 employees across four stores across southern Alabama including Muscle Shoals, Hoover Dam National Monument & Preserve National Park - home to world-renowned steel guitarist Ira Glass - and Centerpoint Energy Stadium near Huntsville where both Auburn University football games are played each year since 2020. Gun hammers were once a popular choice amongst gunsmiths and armorers due to their unique design and ability to withstand a lot of wear and tear. The hammer is a simple piece of metal that is attached at one end to the barrel, and at the other end it has an eccentrically-shaped head that is used to percussion fit rounds into the breech of the gun. Hammering out rounds was often done in sequence, with the first round being hit with the hammer then the second round being hammered into place by means of its flanged end. This process ensured precision during firing as well as ensuring that each shot was properly aligned within the barrel. The use ofhammering guns began to decline in popularity after World War II due to concerns over potential fireballs created by cannon shells detonating prematurely inside barrels caused by over-pounding on impact. As a result, mosthammered firearms became collectors’ items rather than practical battlefield tools. However, there are some remaining hammerless guns in circulation today which attest to their history and importance.
The gun hammer was invented by a French engineer, Auguste-Marie-Jacques Conte, in 1847. He designed and patented the first gun hammer design. The key difference between the modern gun hammer and Conte's original design is that the modern gun hammer has two metal plates that are held together by an elastic band. When the trigger is pulled, these plates move independently of each other and rotate as they come into contact with the barrel or stock. This rotation causes thehammer to jolt forward and release the shot.
The Vestavia Hills, Alabama area is located in the southern Great Lakes region and was long known for its fertile farming land. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Vestavia Hills in 1837 and by 1840, there were six families living here. The early growth of the village was due to its location near a coal mine and railroads, which helped support its development. By 1870, the population had increased to 350 residents and by 1920, it had reached 2,000. The town grew rapidly during the interwar years because of World War I production at nearby Dow Chemical Company. During that time, many businesses opened up in Vestavia Hills including an Italian restaurant called Il Fratello (“TheBrothers”), two movie theaters (one being operated by RKO Radio Pictures), a grocery store/ bakery/cafeteria combo with a swimming pool on one side and tennis courts on the other, a post office (opened in 1922), four churches (All Souls Episcopal Church being built in 1915; First Baptist Church built in 1919;Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1921; United Methodist Church constructed in 1927) as well as schools like Vestavia Hills High School (opened in 1909) and Vestavia Hills Junior High School (opened in 1917). During World War II, many businesses closed down due to Allied bombings but some such as the movie theater continued operations while others like the grocery store/ bakery went out of business. In 1945, local resident Clyde Welch developed Whatcom Park which contained baseball diamonds, lakeside beaches and other recreational amenities for locals and visitors alike. With all these new developments came increased taxes which helped fund public works projects such as paving roads and building water towers. These days, vestavhillians enjoy plenty of cultural attractions including art galleries, concerts amphitheaters and classical music performances throughout the year.
The Vestavia Hills area was first settled by the Alabama Native Americans in the 17th century. The first European to visit the area was French explorer Jean de la Vallière in 1628. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his forces invaded Alabama and captured Fort Gaines, which led to the nickname of "The Father of the Confederacy." The area was part of what is now Montgomery County until 1907. In that year, it became part of Jefferson County.
