In 1868–69, Captain James Cook sailed through Kotzebue Strait and sighted Kodiak Island for the first time since his voyage under Captain Mikhail Vasilevsky three years earlier. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Anchorage, Alaska were the French in 1795. The Dutch also explored and claimed the area but abandoned it because of the difficult conditions. Russian fur traders arrived in 1824 and began trading with Native Americans. In 1867, a group of Englishmen founded a post on Kodiak Island. They named it Fort Yukon after their home country, England. The United States took over Kodiak Island in 1898 and established an administrative center there called Nome.
