The first AR-15 rifles were built in 1963 by Eugene Stoner and Robert Maynard, two former officers with the United States Marine Corps. The rifle was designed as a lightweight weapon that could be easily transported across country. It quickly became popular among police and military personnel, and soon after, other security agencies began to adopt it. The following year, John Melson made another important contribution to the development of the AR-15 upper receiver. Melson was a designer at Colt Firearms Corporation who had worked on designs for handguns including the 1911 Pistol and the Colt Cobra Rifle. He developed a new type of upper receiver that would become known as the “Melson’s Mod 0” or “MOD 0A” Upper Receiver. This new design featured a redesigned bolt carrier that allowed for greater accuracy and faster fire rates. In 1966, Monsanto Company created what would eventually become known as the AR-10 Upper Receiver. This rifle was designed as an upgrade for existing assault rifles such as the Thompson/Center M1 Carbine and Remington 870 Shotguns. Using components from both Melson’s MOD 0A Upper Receiver and Monsanto Company’s own prototypes, they managed to create a rifle that outperformed any of its predecessors in terms of accuracy, firepower, and durability. By 1970, many law enforcement agencies had adopted AR-15 rifles into their arsenals. These firearms quickly became popular among members of militias and self-defense organizations due to their ability to handle large amounts of ammunition without issue. Over time, more manufacturers entered intothe market offering their own versions of the AR-15 Upper Receiver; however, none managed to achieve widespread success like Monsanto Company did with its original design。
