Juneau is a town located in the center of Juneau County, Alaska, United States. It was founded in 1884 by John D. Rockefeller and his partners, August Belknap and George Bird Grinnell. The community has grown from its original population of about 100 to over 10,000 residents since 2006. The name " Juneau" is derived from the Natives' word "Juna," meaning 'island'. The first Europeans to visit the area were Pierre Cook and Nicolas Denoon in 1792. In 1824–25 Russian fur trader Ivan Tchaikovsky explored the region and named it Kotzebue after his friend's estate near Moscow. A post office called Kotzebue was established in 1827, but no one lived there until 1870 when Capt. Samuel Eells moved settlers there and renamed them Kotzebue Landing for himself and his family. In 1840–41 Hermanas Kukui (alias Igalof) led a party of 11 men from Sitka on an exploration trip up the Inside Passage to Kodiak Island but never made it back alive due to a severe winter storm that struck Anchorage on January 1, 1840. He may have been lost or stranded on Kodiak Island for weeks before he finally sighted land about 120 miles northwest of Sitka on February 9—the first European sighting of what is now Alaska. His party had left Kodiak four days earlier with supplies and provisions for a journey that would take them more than 2,500 miles (3,350 km). A new post office was established at Juneau in 1884 with Wm Henson as Postmaster General because no one wanted to travel downriver to Sitka anymore due to fears of hostile Indians or bears raiding their stores upstream. In 1886 developers James Maynard & Co., seeking access to copper mineral deposits south of Valdez decided they should build a town onshore rather than wait for approval from Interior Department officials at Sitka which could take years; landowners opposed development so Maynard built Fort Richardson instead while still waiting for approval which he received in 1888 (). The fort served as an important military base during World War II; during the early 1950s it also became home to Naval Air Station Cherry Point () where Strategic Air Command learned how to use jet fighters during the Cold War era (). After Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson closed in 1994 its functions were assumed by Elmendorf AFB (), but main runway remains open today as Heritage Airport .
