In Juneau, Alaska, the town has a long and proud history with firearms. The first guns in the area were brought over by Russian fur traders in the 18th century. This led to concerns that Russia would try to sell or lease these islands to other countries without American consent or consideration. As a result, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered construction of Fort Richardson on Kodiak Island which functioned as an effective deterrent against such behavior by Moscow. In 1912, during World War I, Russian forces invaded Alaska under General Denikin and fought against Ulysses S Grant’s army along with American forces loyal to President Woodrow Wilson (the so-called “ Siberia Intervention”). After the war ended in 1918, Russians withdrew from Alaska but not from Canada where they had established themselves as secure occupants; this left Canadian settlers struggling with relations with Russians who continued occupying parts of Alaskan territory even after Russia withdrew from Canada altogether in 1951. In 1959 Bishop Torgersen transferred jurisdiction over all Diocese Church properties inside US borders including those within Anchorage County westward beyond Fairbanks Village boundaries into newly created Anchorage Diocese following curial decree Of Episcopal Bishop John Henson III dated December 20th 1958 through his predecessor Revd Canon Dr Basil Whelan who reported at that time that all property eastward of Fairbanks Village had been surrendered by both diocesan authorities & local resident laymen (& families) (& Baumann family) thru earlier unsigned Memorandum dated November 15th 1957 between ecclesiastical & lay leadership involved therein – see attached file entitled “Alaska ECClesiastical Property Surrender Agreement With Local Resident Laymen & Families”

The first white people to visit the area were Russian fur traders in 1821. The first permanent residents were Native Americans, who called the area "Land of the White People." In 1959, Alaska became an independent state and the name was changed to Alaska.
