Juneau is an unincorporated community in the Juneau Census Area, of the Alaska Department of Commerce. As of the 2010 census, its population was 801. The name "Junction" comes from a post office in nearby Sitka which was opened on July 12, 1853 as Junction Post Office. In 1907, the original townsite was divided into two sections for convenience- one being called South Junction and the other North Junction. The first white settler in Juneau was James Fenton who arrived in 1867 with his family from England. He named his new townafter himself- JFentonville after his initials. The first store opened at South Junction on September 10, 1867 by Wm. Hargrave and Adolphus Bogue with $500 worth of goods sent overland from Sitka. A school was established at North Junction on October 6th by C[harles] Cook and MRS [Moses] Merrill which taught children between 7 and 12 years old. By 1880 there were 15 stores and 100 people living in JFentonville along with 2 boats moored at South junction to help ferry passengers to Sitka and Kodiak Island
