The first post office in Avondale opened in 1887. A post office and school were both built by General Sutter's assistant, Colonel James Waddell. The Gila River valley formed by the Gila River and its tributaries Skeena and Yuma Rivers provided natural fertile ground for farming and ranching activity beginning in the late 19th century. In 1912, Harry Chandler developed a cotton gin at what is now Mesa Verde Road/Route 66 in Avondale to increase exports of agricultural products to Southern California; thisitanized cotton production in Arizona and led to increased employment opportunities for locals. By 1928, avocados had been grown here for over 35 years! In 1925, construction began on what would become one of Phoenix' most iconic landmarks: the original Chase Bank building (now Chase Field). The bank was designed by architects Eero Saarinen and Warren Ziegler and became one ofPhoenix' most recognizable landmarks until it went out of business during the Great Depression. After Chase Bank closed its doors in 1935, several other businesses located around Chase Field including an ice cream parlor (now Glendale Ice Cream)and a movie theater (now Regal Entertainment) took their places leading to what is now known as "Chase Field Boulevard". In 1951-1952, when Arrowhead Dam was completed downstream of Chases Field Boulevard - making it possible for water services to be brought into town from nearby Scottsdale - much development occurred along that stretch of bank which still bears his name today: banks arround courtyards have been replaced with driveways or parking lots while streets have been renamed after institutions such as Ford Motor Company or NEA Records Tower before becoming Clark Drive or University Drive again during recent decades! Today's downtown skyline can be seen looking upstream past Chase Field onto Camelback Mountain...

In 1888, Avondale became an incorporated town under the name of Phoenix. In 1912, Avondale's only store burned down, so the town built its first school that year. The first post office opened in 1916. In 1951, Phoenix annexed Avondale; as part of this annexation process, it provided for city government with all property east of Seventh Street (now First Avenue) within the boundaries of the new city limits while still retaining rights to use that land for cattle pastures and other purposes until those rights were sold off to private individuals or businesses in 1966. Phoenix annexed more towns during its years as a municipality: Gilbert in 1952 (the annexation process repealed due to local opposition), Scottsdale in 1957 (the annexation process repealed due to local opposition), Tempe in 1959 (the annexation process repealed due to local opposition), Chandler on July 1, 1961 (the incorporation of Chandler created problems with adjacent towns which refused incorporation into Phoenix proper including Avondale) and Mesa on October 15th 1969 when Mesa City officials objected to being merged into Glendale because they felt their economic development would be better served by staying separate from what they saw as a "sales-driven" community that was not contributing anything positive to downtown Mesa
The area around Avondale, Arizona was settled by the Hualapai and Apache in the 1800s. In 1875, the town of Phoenix was founded in what is now Avondale. The city grew rapidly during the 20th century, becoming one of the leading cities in America.
