El Mirage has experienced a number of changes over time, including becoming what is now known as an agricultural center with citrus production accounting for most of the community's income during the 1920s; becoming an automotive manufacturing center during World War II with production of B-24 bombers; experiencing rapid growth during the 1960s as a result of new oil development within its boundaries; and adopting more recent trends such as being one of Arizona's fastest-growing cities thanks to its engagement in various business ventures such as online gambling and real estate development

El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as El Mirage was first explored by Spanish traders in the 16th century and later claimed by Mexico. On November 15, 1881, it became a U.S. territory following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. When Arizona became a state in 1912, El Mirage was given to it as part of metropolitan Tucson proper. The community grew slowly until World War II when military bases were constructed there and businesses sprang up to support them including Anheuser Busch Brewery and Lockheed Martin Aircraft Corp., which built two large airfields called Ray Mears Air Force Base and Phoenix Municipal Airport. In 1957, El Mirage incorporated as a city under the name Mesa del Mar and began growing rapidly again; its population peaked at 10,000 in 1970 but has declined since then due largely to commuting from nearby Tucson and Scottsdale for jobs in those cities or other major metropolitan areas outside of Phoenix. In 2007, an effort led by Mayor Rich Boykin to create a downtown district within the City limits saw teeth driven into that proposal after much bickering among various factions within El Mirage about what types of development should be allowed there (and whether any would actually result from such efforts). That resulted in what is now known as "El Mirage Boulevard" being Streetscape Designated pursuant to SB 1070 which authorizes local governments to make land use decisions affecting transportation infrastructure without prior consent from developers or their investors even though no action has ever been taken on that designation thus far… although some demolition/landscaping work is currently underway on four blocks leading up to I-10 where "El Mirage Boulevard" intersects with Centennial Road (formerly US Route 66) just east of its current terminus near Southbank Drive; all this while considerable planning still needs to be done for how best to trafficize that corridor – likely involving adding more lanes but also widening sidewalks and creating more bike paths/connections between neighborhoods along “Elmir Boulevard” itself rather than simply providing access via ramps off I-10 southbound (the existing route followed by most pickups/droppings into town)
