Flagstaff is a city in Prescott County, Arizona, United States. The population was 15,914 at the 2010 census. The downtown core of Flagstaff is home to the local Chamber of Commerce and several blocks of Barsuey Street are pedestrian cross streets that run parallel to Oneida Creek. As one of the most recent settlements in what would become Arizona, Flagstaff has experienced various waves of settlement and growth over its history. The first settlers arrived at what is now Flagstaff on March 16, 1868 by horseback from Bradley Valley in New Mexico. A small community developed around the military post called Fort Yuma near present-day Window Rock. There were few permanent residents until 1881 when gold was discovered in nearby Cochise County and people started flowing into the area to assay the new find. By 1886, there were more than 100 people living in Flagstaff proper with an estimated 1,000 miners working claims around town and on rancho grants within sight or hearing of where today’s downtown stands. The following year saw development surrounding First National Bank which stood at what is now Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 1900 and 1910 before moving to its current location across Shields Avenue NW from Apache Junction eastward in 1912. At this time much of central Phoenix was still rural so bank operations took place out doors on large lots next to Second National Bank across Shields Avenue NE from Apache Junction eastward starting about 1912 until 1978 when it relocated again (northwest corner First NationalBank building). In 1915 construction began on McCloskey Dam across Oneida Creek providing irrigation for much of central Phoenix while also serving as a storage facility for water used by farmers west of Phoenix prior to dam construction beginning July 29 1955 In 1916 Pima Indian ranches along Oneida Creek were taken over by white ranchers who named their holdings after state capitals such as Sacramento (Laramie), Denver (Aurora), Omaha (Norman) and Kansas City (Topeka). On February 12 1926 Wm Hatton became proprietor & manager/director Wyoming Uranium Company with his son Harry Hatton becoming president/vice president under Harry's father Charles Hatton who had been general manager since 1924 when company moved from Fayetteville Arkansas headed by Johnnie Moorehead but including James Buchanan Easley as well; uranium production commenced soon thereafter during early 1927 #1 mill licensed Sept 9 1929 finally completed Nov 24 1930See timeline attached In 1928 a store opened at 6th & Washington Streets NW just south of present day Colorado AveNW which served as nucleus for many later businesses including then Peoria restaurateur DonatellO'Neill's Place flagstone-lined dining room now Orpheum Theatre seating 3500 Capacity being built adjacent then Goldwater Gulch SW side parking lot capacity build up to 2500 visitors per day later annexing Goldwater Gulch SW side parking lot . . . main street renamed Seattle AveNW circa 1933wwwww wwwcompleted Apr 1935 see timeline attached Today Flagstaff experiences significant tourism due largely to two major tourist attractions: McCloskey Dam Recreation Area operated by AZ Parks Department comprising 12 dams located throughout Prescott Valley Recreational District which offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, hiking, windsurfing etc.,and McCloskey Lake Recreation Area managed by Navajo Nation open for boating, camping etc.; both areas offer visitor services such as Interpretive Center with exhibits about local history & culture
