When the Kingman Guns and Gear store first opened its doors in 1955, there were few other options for buying firearms in the small town of Kingman. The store was located on Main Street between First Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, across from the K-8 School. At that time, Kingman consisted of a handful of homes, a post office, two businesses (a feed mill and a grocery), and one house belonging to Mrs. Hargrave. There were no gun stores or ranges in the area at that time. The store's first customer was Mr. J.C. Goodspeed who bought a Thompson submachine gun from the store's owner, Mr. Lyle Sorenson. For many years, Mr. Goodspeed was the only customer ever to buy an automatic rifle from the store! In 1964, when Mr. Goodspeed passed away, his son John purchased his father's share in the business and continued to operate it as an independently owned shop until he sold it to George Neumann in 1984. In 1978, then-Mayor John Tipton made history when he became Arizona's first openly gay mayor! When Mayor Tipton came out as gay during his campaign for office, he decided to start wearing a Gay Pride parade flagpin on his lapel instead of having someone else carry it for him! After becoming Mayor Tipton began sponsoringGun shows throughout Phoenix every year which drew attention to Kingman Gun & Gear Store and its inventory of firearms available for purchase by all interested individuals statewide! In 1988/89 new owners took over ownership of the business after being employed by George Neumann; they continue to run it as an independently owned business until 2003 when they donated it back to Kingman City Council with plans for use as a museum/library within city limits! In 2006 city council voted 5-0 approval for development on part of lot where Kingsgun gear used to stand including construction of a $11M building funded by local taxpayers!
