Sahuarita is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1868 by Anglo-Mexican immigrants and has been the county seat of Pinal County since 1911. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Sahuarita" means "the place where everything begins." The original settlers were Mexican immigrants who had come to Arizona from central Mexico searching for land to farm. In 1868, they established a rancho (farmstead) called El Rancho Sahuarita just east of present-day Sahuarita on what is now the eastern edge of Apache Junction National Forest. They started up a cattle business and also raised horses and other animals. The first post office in Sahuarita was established in 1870; it remained open until 1907. In 1911, the United States Congress passed an act creating Pinal County and adopting the name "Sahuarita." At that time, most of what is now Pinal County was still part of Cochise Indian Reservation. Accordingly, the county courthouse was located in Bisbee until 1939 when it moved to Saguaro City. One important development during this early period was the arrival of American engineers named George Stephenson and Hiram Maxim who designed irrigation systems for agriculture in Phoenix and Tucson basin areas respectively as part of their work on Project Aztec which aimed to improve public water supplies through indirect Aquifer recharge projects throughout Arizona
