Surprise was founded in 1864 by James W. McDonald and his family. The town was named for the place where they first discovered gold. During World War I, the mill turned out more than two thousand barrels of oil per day for the war effort; however, production stopped after the war because new equipment became available from Germany. In 1927, Olsen passed control of the mill to his son Larsen who continued running it until 1949 when it was bought by Jerome Langerthaler who changed its name to "Surprise Aluminum Company".
