Tempe is a city in Arizona, United States. The population was 113,871 at the 2010 census. It is metropolitan area of Phoenix. The city has been inhabited by the Kojak people for over 10,000 years and was founded by the Pima tribe in 1847 as Tempe Creek. The name "tempe" means "place where water boils." The first European to visit what is now Tempe were Spanish soldiers on December 14th, 1763 when they encountered an encampment of Native Americans known as the Arizonas near what is now Scottsdale Road and John Young Parkway. Juan Manuel de Alvarado later named the area after his father-in-law, Governor of New Spain Don Dionisio Gilbert y Costilla. On February 21st, 1847, following Mexican independence from Spain, Apache Chief Cochise attacked a posse of Ute Indian scouts led by Lieutenant Jonathan Robertson at Tempe Creek Bridge Ruins which left four dead and fifteen wounded; this event recalled Apache Vengeance which had occurred two weeks earlier near Tucson when eight Mexicans were killed by sixApache warriors under Cochise's leadership. This attack sparked American settler interest in the area and began what would be a long battle between American settlers and Apaches for control over this land. A group of Mormon missionaries arrived in Tempe on April 12th 1851 followed soon afterward by another group from Nauvoo ( Illinois) looking for passage to California via Arizona Territory before their Missouri LDS mission could start up again in that state. Mormon pioneers played an important role in developing Tempe into one of America's most significant cities during its early years; some of them are buried here including Joseph Smith Jr., founder of Mormonism who built Church headquarters here before he moved it to Nauvoo; Brigham Young who served as president of Utah Territory from 1849 until his death three years later at Millcreek Village east of town; Elijah Abel who served as mayor from 1889 until 1912; Arthur Ashe who won tennis' prestigious Wimbledon Championships in 1965 with partner Billie Jean King and Sharkey Hobbs; among many others listed here are Hideki Matsubara (founder – Fuji Electric), Dick Enright (the first person to win both an Indianapolis 500 Championship driving a Formula One car and NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship driving for Dale Earnhardt Motorsports), Hoot Gibson (founder – Gibson Helicopter Service), Donnie Simpson (of “The Simpsons” fame), Bob Hope (comedian/actor/ singer) amongst many others In 1912,Temple University became Arizona State University after voters passed a proposition providing general education statewide instead of just within the universities' respective campuses like it had been since1885 when ASU was established only on campus at Mesa Campus while UA continued to offer undergraduate degrees through several other institutions such as Southern Arizona College & School Of Mines & Technology etc.; until 1967 when all four universities merged into one statewide university system under Chancellor Joanne Robinson calledArizona State University–Phoenix
