Arkadelphia is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Arkadelphia was first settled by members of the Cherokee Nation in 1827. A post office called Arkadelphia was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1880, a group of settlers from Kentucky purchased land east of present-day Arkadelphia and started to build atownsite on what would become their property. They named their new town Arkadelphia after then-Governor James K. Polk's home state of Tennessee (now Kentucky). The original community consisted of about 50 homes and three stores. In 1886, the Arkansas General Assembly voted to rename the town for John Crain, Jr., who had played an important role in helping to organize the Arkansas Territory during its early days as a country separate from Mexico. John Neely Bryan became the first mayor of Arkadelphia on May 10, 1909; he served until his death on October 25 that year. He had been elected to this position after being chosen by fellow mayors as one of five finalists for the vacant seat created when Mayor George Hines died suddenly two months earlier without having any plans to run for reelection. His term ended on November 3 that year when he was succeeded by his successor Melvin Jeter licensed veterinarian and pharmacist Harry Swayne Sr.. Arkadelphia experienced some growth during World War II with both its population (which increased from 100 people at its peak in 1943) and its production abilities due to its location just off I-70 between Little Rock and Memphis (the only major city within easy driving distance). However, most development came afterwards as demand for housing declined following the war's end and economic recession hitArkmontonians hard later in the decade . however , many residents still continue living there today because they believe it offers "heaven on earth" like no other place

The city grew rapidly during the 1840s as a result of transportation links to Memphis and Fort Smith on the Arkansas River. In 1854, Arkadelphia incorporated as a city and began to build its own public works department, including an opera house and two churches.Arkadelphia experienced rapid growth until the early 1870s when cotton prices fell and manufacturing declined; ensuing economic stagnation led to high levels of poverty and crime until some progress has been made since then (see below). In 1971, part of Arkadelphia were destroyed by fire that swept through several blocks of downtown business districts; this event helped spur efforts to promote revitalization within the community which has seen mixed successes over time (see below). A total reconstruction project costing $30 million was completed in 2007-2008 with mixed results overall: while some aspects such as increased pedestrian traffic had improved conditions for many residents, particularly those living near downtown areas,[citation needed] overall access to basic services such as water or trash service had worsened[citation needed].
