As the largest city in Benton County and home to many businesses, schools, and other institutions, it is no wonder that ammunition has a long history in this community. The first ammunition store was established in Benton in 1892. By 1898, there were at least five stores operating in the city. Ammunition production began in earnest east of the Arkansas River in 1903 when a company was founded by E.H. Stroud to produce artillery rounds and other munitions. The company grew rapidly and by 1907 had become one of the leading manufacturers of firearms ammunition in the United States. In 1911, rifle ammunition became a major industry with the establishment of Arsenal Ammunition Company as one of several companies devoted to producing rifle rounds specifically for military use. In 1916, Armoury Ammunition merged with Winchester Ammunition Corporation becoming Winchester-Armoury Ammunition Corporation (WAC). WAC produced high quality rifles ammunition until 1970 when it was Divided into two divisions: USA Arms which produces Rimfire cartridges for pistols and revolvers;and International Paper Mills which produces lead core rounds for handguns and fishing gear among others products lineages today (see below). The post-World War II years were difficult for American firearms manufacturers as they had been forced to compete against European firms who had maintained higher standards throughout their industries during wartime production shortages caused by alliances forged between West Germany, Japan, Italy etc.. In 1951 Colt Firearms USA Inc., became an affiliate of United Industries Limited (UIL) through a merger that created Colt/UIL Ammo Division (C/UD) within newly formed Parker Hannifin Corporation (PHC). UIL Ammo Division continued manufacturing rifle ammo under different names until 1984 when it was renamed again as simply "Winchester". successor corporations include Hornady Manufacturing Co., Krebs & Haas Ammo Corp., Crosman Arms Incorporated and Federal Ballistics Corporation among others since then

Benton is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Arkansas River just upstream from North Little Rock and about east of Arkadelphia. The first permanent white settlers in Benton were James Goodloe and his family who arrived in 1814. In 1822, Colonel John Clements built a cabin on the current site of Benton. He named it "Benton" after his home state of Kentucky. The first store in Benton was opened by Nathan Fuller in 1827. A post office was established at Benton in 1830, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1875. In 1840, David Dysart organized a wagon train to travel northeast to Independence for trade with Missourians living there then headed back northwest across the Mississippi River to Fort Smith where they took up land near what is now Arkadelphia On February 25, 1841 Dysart founded what would become Benton as a result of this trade: Dysart's Townsite (later known as downtown). By 1850 the population of Benton had reached 400 residents with 60 businesses operating there including stores, taverns and mills Among these early businesses were Sutter's Mill which started production of flour from corn that had been imported from Illinois; Greeneville Forge which produced wrought iron products; First National Bank which offered banking services; and Drury & Beardsley Bookbinders who made saddles and other horse equipment out of hides/bone/wire
